This DVD is definitely a must have for all dvd collectors. As Mos Def stated in a few of the shows, these artists get up there and say things you may already be thinking. They will have you laughing at times, and will have you reflecting on the state of our society at others. As they show clips of the audience, you find every skin tone and age up in there and its a beautiful thing to see them all laughing together and even shedding tears together…It’s deep..

Based on my experience from Def Comedy Jam, I was expecting all of the artists to be African American, but Russell mixed it up with Caucasians, Asians and Arabs which was HOT…We never really know how different people look at the world and this gives you a glimpse into what each person sees and what they’ve been through.

DEFinitely a classic!!

I caught this show on HBO by chance and became a fan instantly. If you are a person who appreciates any kind of art form, you will find true value in these performances. These poems are a window into the different cultures in our world and they allow you to relate to and understand other people and ourselves. This season has 4 episodes. However, I encourage you to also get Season 2 particularly (I have up until Season 3). On Episode 2 Danny Hoch did a piece on 9/11. Simply outstanding! It was at once somber, funny, sarcastic, introspective, sad, in short the most brilliant performance. Same goes to a performance by “Black Ice” which was Hip-Hop, yet anti-gangsta… awesome!! Beau Sia is also incredible with a hyperbolic performance about the “Asian Invasion”. They alone make it a must have for anyone with an appreciation for poetry. I must warn you language can be explicit at times.

I fully agree with Mr Forsythe from London (Ontario). If like Mr Maitlin, you judge this movie with the special effects of the 1999, the movie is hokey. But the character, dedication and courage of Ulysse has never been so well portrayed as by Kirk Douglas. Sylvana Mangano doesn’t do much, but she portrayed only too well why a man will fight 20 years to return to her and their son. Anthony Quinn gives a fine performance as the suitor. The recent version with Armand Assante, while proficient in special effects, doesn’t exploit the richness of characters showned in the multi-european film. I have seen this movie in the 1960 and again this year. It is the same emotion and commitment. This is Homer’s Odyssey. If you have not seen this movie, get your hand on the vidéo. This is a film I would gladly buy in VideoLaser disc or the new DVD. It is worth the money.

…and that’s putting it mildly! Here Kirk is playing the Greek general Ulysses who spends twenty years away from the bosom of his family, ten at the Trojan War and ten on an ill-fated voyage back to Ithaca.

Now, when I first came across my brothers watching this video, I couldn’t believe my eyes that Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn were in such a cheap-looking movie! Nobody else is an actor or actress of any standing, and the production values are not up to Hollywood standards. Most distressing of all, everyone’s dubbed in, including Kirk!

Once I had gotten over all these obstacles, though, I was able to enjoy the movie. Ulysses’ adventures are recounted as a flashback as he recuperates from amnesia in a strange kingdom. We see him outwit the Cyclops, go mad from the siren’s song, and lose all track of time while being enchanted by Circe. Intersperced with Ulysses’ strivings are scenes back at Ithaca, where Penelope has all she can do to hold onto her absent husband’s throne from would-be usurpers vying for her hand. A new suitor emerges from the pack, played by Anthony Quinn, and he, like Kirk, plays his role straight despite the film’s other limitations. The VERY end, AFTER all the bloodshed in the banquet hall, seems to end abruptly with Kirk and Penelope talking very fast off screen about how they have to make up for lost time. That looks a little, “We have to give the cameras back, so let’s end it now.”

Still in all, “Ulysses” will entertain you if you let it; it did wonders for me, my brothers, and a two-year-old who wandered into the room and found the Cyclops really exciting.

After seeing this miniseries and the original David Lynch theatrical release, I felt compelled to read the book and settle some plot inconsistencies (i.e. where did the weirding weapons go and where the heck was Duncan Idaho really supposed to die? In the Atreides compound during the initial Harkonnen attack or blown to bits by Harkonnen patrols in the desert spiriting Paul and his mother to safety?). The Sci-Fi series got it right.

I did not find Allec Newman annoying as some people did. Sure, he was wooden, but Paul was schooled in the controlling of his own emotions by his mother so that they did not betray him. After the Harkonnen attack his ruthless, unemotional behavior became more pronounced as he was immersed in the grim Fremen culture.

In terms of following the original story, the Sci-Fi Channel series is superior to Lynch’s version. Sure, nobody seems to be able to get the fact that Paul Atreides is supposed to be 14-15 when the story starts and that he is described as being much darker complected than either actor who has played him in the past, but things actually happened in the sequence they were supposed to in the miniseries. People die where they are supposed to and events take place in the proper sequence.

Another nice element of the miniseries was the use of knives. Everybody has knives in the miniseries, just like in the book, where knives play an important part of Fremen culture. In the miniseries, characters are more likely to duke it out up close with knives than shoot blasts from weirding modules (which aren’t even in the book).

Karel Dobry’s Dr. Kynes and P.H. Moriarty’s Gurney Halleck (characters who, despite their importance to Herbert’s original story, were glossed over in Lynch’s version of “Dune”) are both given the attention they deserve in the miniseries. I thought both actors did well, as did the actor who played Stilgar (Uwe Ochsenknecht). I liked both Ochsenknecht and Dobry’s quiet, understated menace. Despite their lack of emotion and stoic demeanor, you could instantly recognize them as the most dangerous men in the room. In the miniseries Gurney Halleck looks and feels like the battle-hardened ex-slave who would die for his Duke. If anything, Patrick Stewart’s portrayal in the movie (when his character was on screen) was too “clean” to be Gurney Halleck.

Hey, Raban even had some dialogue in the miniseries (like he did in the book) instead of wandering around and giggling perversely while eating some indescribable meat product like he did in Lynch’s movie. Feyd even gets to do things in the miniseries besides offering Sting’s characteristic leer of the Lynch interpretation. Sure, his clothes stunk in the miniseries, but he was shown as being much more dangerous (both physically and mentally) in the miniseries than Sting was in the movie version. Stepping out of a steam-bath and cocking on eyebrow on cue don’t concern me as much as the man who looks harmless and has terrible fashion sense, but is a cold-blooded killer. Ian McNiece surprised me as Baron Harknonnen, since I’m used to him in more effeminate, comedic roles. I thought he did a fine job as the Baron, mixing the vicious with the pathetic (now if only I hadn’t seen quite so much of him wearing nothing but his suspensor harness…).

The miniseries does have its weaknesses. Once again, the actor who played Yueh fell short. I never once saw the tattoo Yueh had on his forehead that signified his imperial conditioning. How many times is this blasted tattoo mentioned in the book? William Hurt has as much intensity as a corpse. I do think that Lynch’s movie made the Bene Gesserit more menacing with their bald heads and black gowns. The Bene Gesserit attire of the miniseries was laughable. In fact, hats were pretty terrible throughout the series. I also like Lynch’s interpretation of guild navigators and Harkonnen “garbage bags with green eyeholes” shock troops. However, other visual elements, like the stillsuits (the primary wardrobe of the second half of the story) and vehicles, are more accurate in the Sci-Fi miniseries.

Is it perfect? No. Was it enough to cause me to buy a copy of the book to find out if they did a better/worse job? Yes. Is it more faithful to the original story? Yes.

David Lynch’s 2-hour feature film (later extended to 3 hours) and John Harrison’s 6-hour TV miniseries each have very different interpretations of Frank Herbert’s masterful sci-fi novel “Dune”. Separately, neither effort adequately captures Herbert’s vision of humanity and struggles for power in the far distant future; but each work brings varying degrees of depth to the screen, giving the viewer a glimpse of what Herbert envisioned.

Strengths of Harrison’s TV miniseries interpretation:

* Better character development: especially Duke Leto Atreides (William Hurt), Princess Irulan Corrino (Julie Cox), Padishah-Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Giancarlo Giannini) and Stilgar (Uwe Ochsenknecht).
* A more comprehensive telling of the story: including the Corrino family, the ordinary lives of the Fremen, the ties between the Harkonnen and Atreides families, and the influence of the Bene Gesserit. Strangely, Paul is never called Usul.
* Better special effects and panoramic views, except for the often-used surrealistic lighting.
* Little use of stock footage scenes, which was often used by Lynch.

Strengths of Lynch’s feature film interpretation:
* Better costumes overall, especially the all of the uniforms and Fremen stillsuits, which, unlike the TV miniseries, looked as if they would actually work.
* Better portrayal of the Mentat.
* Hearing the thoughts of the characters added an extra element.
* Better acting overall: especially Lady Jessica (Francesca Annis), Baron Harkonnen’s doctor (Leonardo Cimino), Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt), Paul ‘Muad’Dib’ Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), Baron Harkonnen (Kenneth McMillan), Duke Leto (Jürgen Prochnow) and Gurney Halleck (Patrick Stewart).

Someone who hasn’t read Herbert’s novel and only sees Lynch’s feature film may not understand the story, but someone who hasn’t read the novel but only sees Harrison’s TV miniseries will probably understand the story without difficulty. Anyone who has read the novel and sees either live-action interpretation will probably be disappointed to some degree by both, but each one can be appreciated for what each brings to the screen. The acting from Alec Newman as Paul ‘Muad’Dib’ Atreides was by no means perfect in the TV miniseries, but did shed a different light on the character from Kyle MacLachlan.

Overall, I give Harrison’s TV miniseries version of “Dune” a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It is interesting to speculate how David Lynch would have added more to his film if he had been able to create a more comprehensive piece like the TV miniseries, as well as use CGI special effects and the best actors from both. Clearly, each screen interpretation shows what each director was able to accomplish with his available resources and artistic license.

This is my current favorite DVD series. It’s so absurd a premise and so beyond the pale of most cartoon series out there these days, that it has infinite appeal to both my sixteen year old son and to me. Our dynamic trio and their next door Jersey neighbor, the tank top wearing Carl, are the funniest toon characters in Television land. That’s saying a lot as television is currently witnessing a true renaissance of cartoon humor.

The creators are the same crew that brought us the equally silly, but cutting edge SPACEGHOST COAST TO COAST. The same sort of hip, off colour humor that informed that show is at play here, only more so. My favorite segment involves a manic depressive, deadbeat, suicidal doll who has a negative, lifeforce-draining impact on all who come in contact with him. Other highlights include a pair of aliens who look as if they’ve escaped from some crude ’70s Atari game. The punk talking little alien, err, is particularly amusing.

Of the three main characters, my favorite is Meatwad, the mush mouthed, single toothed meatball, whose speech is almost unintelligble, but who is delightfully, stupidly impressionable.

If you’re in the mood for some absolutely mindless, but hysterically hip comic relief, give this DVD set a try. The extras aren’t that much to write home about, but no contemporary toon buff should be without this two disc set in his/her collection.

If you have a sensibilty that is as warped as mine is, and you enjoy The Simpsons, South Park, Beavis and Butthead, The Family Guy, etc., I’m certain that you will enjoy this anti-superhero trio.

BEK

No description of any kind would make someone take this show seriously, for it sounds infinitely silly and stupid, but in truth, it just works. “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” is, without a doubt, the funniest and most creative show on Cartoon Network`s “Adult Swim” cartooning block (a series of cartoon shows made for teenagers and adults that can take more risks than normal programming). It follows the misadventures of 3 six-foot-tall living foods: Master Shake, the leader of the Aqua Teens and a milkshake, Frylock, the rational one and a bunch of french fries, and Meatwad, a very… unintelligent wad of meat and the object of many a prank set up by Master Shake. They live next to Karl, an overweight man reliving the 80s who hates it when they use his pool. When they are not getting into situations on their own, they are battling anything out-of-the-ordinary, from a living, suicidal and depressed toy of Meatwads, to a juvenile rapper named “MC Pee Pants” to a pair of 2D aliens known as the Mooninites. A crazy and amazing show, this is a must see.

Seeing this Globtrekker travelogue again on TV reminded me of how well it portrays the beauty and immense scale of this amazing country. It also superbly communicates the warmth and generosity of its people. Disregard another reviewer’s grousings about the economic inaccuracies (yeah, so what?–it’s actually much cheaper now to visit Argentina), and just sit back and enjoy sweeping views of Iguasu Falls, the Argentine cordillera, windswept Patagonia, and the Perito Moreno glacier. Justine Shapiro has just the right balance of wonder and wimsy to pull off this travelogue. I especially like her good-humored response to a pass made at her in Buenos Aires, and her imitation of a penguin walk on the beach in Patagonia. This is a real fun video and will make you want to visit this great country.

Justine Shapiro is really charming and made me laugh in several instances. This video is superbly shot, and even myself, as a local argentine, found it entertaining and informative.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Globe Trekker: Argentina! Click Here

The reviewer before me was too harsh to give it a single star. Just discard any references you hear on the video about prices (for that, look around in travel web sites, and ANYTHING taped will get outdated over time).

Yes, this video was shot back in ~2000 when the country’s currency, the peso, was artificially pegged to the US dollar, and neocons were running the country, overvaluating our currency (which as you might imagine caused the exports of anything almost impossible, as everything was cheaper imported rather than locally produced).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Globe Trekker: Argentina! Click Here

After the sad events of late 2001 and early 2002, the local currency was devaluated and that artificial economic policy of “1 peso to 1 dollar” was abandoned. After a brieg period of chaos, the country started recovering and now (2005/2006) exports are booming, job creation is on the rise, tourism is booming, and exports (both agriculture and industrial) are at an all time high. Plenty of factories have re-opened its doors and in some sectors of the economy employers are having a hard time finding people for the positions.

(…) the peso is now at around $3 pesos per US dollar. (…)

(…)

Hope this helps.

I have watched now 7 of the Tsubasa DVD series from Clamp and I must say all have been great. But The Vol 8 was the most amusing with the very first episode having our heroes enter a world of old fashioned animation. With Mokona being in control of both the world created and our brave heroes. I have been thrilled with this series and the characters have become fast familiar to me. Great series to share with others too.

I’m so glad they kept this one going. I really like it. Parts of it drag but overall, good anime. Its got some of my favorite voice actors in it too, so thats a plus.

There are both pros and cons to this remastered/rereleased Hitchcock boxed set. The pros are that all have been remastered (all of them were anamorphic despite what other reviews have stated except for the first edition of “Vertigo” on DVD–read the boxes of the original releases or better yet watch them)and the remastering job has resulted in colors being bolder in many cases (Do a comparison as I did)with images being crisper and with slightly better resolution. There is an exception to this–”The Man Who Knew Too Much” actually looks worse than the previous release. While colors are good the image clarity and detail are off. I’m not exactly sure what happened here but it must have been during the Telecine transfer process from film to video (and then DVD). This is based on a head-to-head comparison with the other edition of the film and isn’t based on a bad DVD. Instead, it’s related to the transfer not being quite as good for this new updated version. So if “Man” is one of your favorites I’d advise you to keep the previous DVD. Also, there’s no paper inserts with chapter stops listed as on previous editions. Also, a couple of films didn’t have a huge difference but they were still noticeable for the most part.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection! Click Here

The DVDs are housed four to a DVD “book” with two on each side one on top of the other. I know what you’re thinking–they’ll get scratched–but I didn’t notice any potential for that. Still, you’ll need to be careful taking them out and putting them in and these holders are not as secure as the individual keep cases. Each cover is decorated with images from the original posters for each movie overlapping each other.

Extras are exactly the same as the original releases for each disc. “The Making of Psycho” and “All About ‘The Birds’” which were on the original discs themselves have been relocated to the bonus discs. There’s also three new bonuses included. The first is a 15 minute excerpt from the AFI tribute focusing primarily on Hitch’s droll comments when he accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award. I’ve long wanted to have this on DVD but do wish that Universal had licensed the entire AFI tribute as it was a charming and worthwhile evening. The second extra is a 30 minute interview featuring Pia Lindstrom and William K. Everson and is a vintage videotape interview with Hitchcock from the 70’s. It’s quite a revealing interview with Hitchcock charming the hosts as usual. He discusses quite frankly his likes (pre-production) and dislikes (method actors like Montgomery Clift). The third bonus is a 36 page booklet that, like the booklet that came with “Jaws”, is hardly essential. It does include credits for each movie, some photos and brief comments about each film. It’ll be something you might look at once or twice.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Alfred Hitchcock - The Masterpiece Collection! Click Here

The box itself has a crushed velvet exterior and is quite attractive. The cover has a door that slides into the box to access the movies. So the pros are better transfers for most of the films. If you don’t have all of Hitch’s movies on DVD yet, this is a great deal. The new extras aren’t worth the price of admission if you don’t already have all of these and while they look better, the difference may not be all that striking to you. With the release of Hitch’s TV show and other new stuff coming out, it’s a matter of spending where one can.

I gave this set 4 stars for two reasons; 1) There are a number of so-so Hitchcock films in this set (”Torn Curtain”, “Topaz”, “Marnie” which is one that, despite Robin Wood’s absurd arguments to the contrary, I find to be substandard Hitchcock and the enjoyable but light “Family Plot”). 2)”The Man Who Knew Too Much” should look BETTER than the previous edition but, in fact, looks a bit worse for the wear with less clarity and definition. 3)While we do some some new extras they are slim pickings. I would have loved to get more commentary tracks on these classic films from Hilton Green (Assistant Director on “Psycho” and a number of Hitch’s TV episodes), Bruce Dern or Karen Black (on “Family Plot”) and others on the important films.

Some of Hitch’s finest films are here “Vertigo”, “Rear Window”, “The Man Who Knew Too Much”, “The Trouble With Harry” (an acquired taste), “Psycho”, “Shadow of a Doubt”, “Sabotage”, “Frenzy”, etc but also some of his weaker thrillers as well. It’s a good concise and inexpensive way to get them all.

O.K., I have the box set in my hands, and although I have not watched every movie I have scanned them all in order to write the review. I am not reviewing the movies themselves, just trying to clear up some of the confusion that seems to be surrounding this release.

First, the technical info is as follows:

The Birds, Marnie, The Trouble with Harry, Topaz, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Torn Curtain, Frenzy, and Family Plot are all Dolby 2.0, 1.85 Widescreen, Color.

Vertigo is Dolby 5.1, 1.85 Widescreen, Color

Rope, Shadow of a Doubt and The Bonus Disc are Dolby 2.0, 1.33 Full Frame, Color.

Rear Window is Dolby 2.0, 1.66 Widescreen, Color.

Psycho is Dolby 2.0, 1.85 Widescreen, B&W.

Saboteur is Dolby 2.0, 1.33 Full Frame, B&W

I actually thought the velvet box was rather nice, and I didn’t mind the four discs to a sleeve. The booklet is very nice, printed with lots of color on heavy stock and includes trivia and facts on each movie.

I read a review that said one of the films didn’t look as good as the others, so when I scanned them I tried to pay particular attention to the picture quality. I found all of the movies to be crisp and clean, so I would suggest maybe there was a bad disc in his box set (?).

My only negative is that only Vertigo is remastered in Dolby 5.1. I just don’t understand digitally remastering the films and not the soundtrack.

However, the amount of brilliant filmmaking included in this collection is almost overwhelming. Every film is a treasure, and it’s filmmaking that has rarely been equaled, let alone surpassed.

Look, everyone is always going to have something to complain about (didn’t like the package, the sleeves, hasn’t done justice to the master), even myself with the soundtrack issue, but Universal has put together a 15 disc package of great films for $84.00. What’s that…$5.60 a disc?

If you are on the fence on this one, just click “add to cart” and go to checkout. This is the deal of a lifetime.

A season in the life of former fashion designer, Isaac Mizrahi, as documented by his (then) boyfriend/director/former-Sundance-Film-Fest-Darling, Douglas Keeve. Opening with Mizrahi reading a devastating review in *Womens Wear Daily* of his most recent collection, it is a heartbreaking moment that only artists really understand. But unflattering criticism is part of the ballgame, and Mizrahi rolls with the punches. There is no time to wallow - there’s another collection to be designed, and we watch as Mizrahi looks for inspiration in a variety of sources, eventually becoming most inspired by the idea of basing his Fall collection on the 1935 film *Call of the Wild* and 1922s *Nanook of the North*. What seems such an unlikely course becomes magic as we watch the rough ideas of suede boots and fuzzy jackets transform themselves into a cohesive statement of winter luxury that is completely modern. We watch the details being refined, the fabrics being selected, and most amusingly, the fittings being done with the Holy Trinity of supermodels, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington. We see Evangelista exactly as we expect to - the biggest diva of them all - whining of being discriminated against in shoe selection. This is the woman who once said, “[We] don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000,” but the power she brings to the runway appears to make her worth every penny. We feel the utter despair that Mizrahi feels as he reads that Jean-Paul Gaultier has just unveiled his own Eskimo-themed collection. We see Mizrahi try to persuade the models to undress behind a backlit scrim during the show, and some of them pointedly refusing. But the ones that do, become a stunning backdrop for a knock-out show. The documentary runs full-circle, ending with Mizrahi reading a fabulous review of his excellent collection. It is a film rife with stereotypes of fashionistas, but these stereotypes, like most, have sprung forth from a good bit of truth. And given what is perceived to be the shallowest of milieus, it is a very touching story combining the elements of creativity, criticism, hope and redemption. Mizrahi, whose eponymous fashion house closed a few years ago, entertains in front of the camera, as well as designs, and the constantly revolving cast of characters is a Who’s Who of late-90s fashion magazines. It is Keeve’s first project and was a critical success, presciently capturing Mizrahi at the peak of his career, and the fashion world in one of its most decadent eras. Though neither Mizrahi nor Keeve have attained such prominence since *Unzipped*, is even more special because of it. It was the right combination of the right qualities at the right time that garnered the film and its participants such attention, but, in retrospect, it is a moment that is bound to burst like a garishly elegant soap bubble.

This was amusing. One critic said, “All this tension over a fashion line of eskimo-fasihon-knock-offs.” But that’s kind of what makes it fun, that people are so intense about something so frivolous. Yeah, the term “fashion genius” is a contradiction in terms, but sometimes you have to have some cotton candy in your life. Isaac doesn’t have that bitchy edge that so many cup-cake designers have, so is amusing and likable. Despite the publicity this movie brought him, his company folded. He said–before his company went under–that when someone praised this film to him, he’d rather they’d said, “I bought one of your jackets at full-price.” Isaac then went after the movie business. He didn’t fair well there, I guess, because last I read of him, he’s doing a one-man stage show about his life. (As a heterosexual male, it was kind of unbelievable, too, to see Isaac hugging and pinning the most striking fashion model women alive–Christie Turlington for one–and remain sober-faced and unaffected. If I were hugging Turlington, I’d faint from joy!) A good suppliment to this is the book THE END OF FASHION that describes in one section the demise of Isaac’s label. For one thing, he DID have big-selling items, and the retailers would beg him for more. But he played the artist-image a bit too much, and refused to repeat things, and only did new things that inspired him. Well, he inspired himself right into bankruptcy. But this film, documenting when the company was still going, is great fun to see.

Warner Bros. are finally releasing South Park’s first season on DVD. **ALL** of the episodes from season one are on here, and it has some really good ones. I can’t wait until it comes out because I will definitely buy it. If you’re not sure which episodes are on the First Season, or forgot what they’re about, here they are:

1. Cartman Gets An Anal Probe - 13-Aug-1997
Brief Plot: The boys rescue Kyle’s little brother from aliens who have come to South Park.

2. Weight Gain 4000 - 27-Aug-1997

4. Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride - 3-Sep-1997

5. An Elephant Makes Love To A Pig - 10-Sep-1997

6. Death - 17-Sep-1997

7. Pink Eye - 29-Oct-1997
Pinkeye interrupts Halloween festivities.

8. Damien - 4-Feb-1998
Jesus and Satan fight a battle for spiritual domination on Pay-Per-View which conflicts with Cartman’s birthday party.

9. Starvin’ Marvin - 19-Nov-1997
Government authorities mistake Cartman for a starving African child and send him to Ethiopia.

10. Mr. Hankey, The Christmas Poo - 17-Dec-1997
When Kyle’s musical holiday pal Mr. Hankey shows up it makes for a memorable Christmas in South Park.

11. Tom’s Rhinoplasty - 11-Feb-1998
A substitute teacher gets in between Stan and Wendy’s relationship.

12. Mecha-Streisand - 18-Feb-1998
The boys find a prehistoric relic that spawns a monster that threatens to destroy the world.

13. Cartman’s Mom is a Dirty Slut - 25-Feb-1998
When Cartman begins acting strange a guidance counselor suggests the cure lies with finding his father.

This is going to be great! With such episodes as ‘Cartman Gets An Anal Probe’ and ‘Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo’, you would be crazy not to get it.

Let me start out by saying that if this first season of South Park weren’t so great, I would have given this set 0 or 1 star.

The 2 main drawbacks to this DVD are: 1) the episode listings by disc that are included on the flaps are not even close to the sequencing that actually exists on the discs, with some episodes appearing out of order and in 2 cases not even on the same disc as noted; and 2) no chapter-within-eipsode system exists, which is made painfully obvious after sitting through the howlingly unfunny “Fireside Chat with Matt (Stone) and Trey (Parker)” that prefaces each show. And although the video is quite good (due to the fact that there is only about 95 minutes of video on each disc) the sound is far less superior, filled with many audio “pops” and syncronization issues that were not resolved by swapping out my set for another.

In short, I would like to say that although it is great to see South Park finally come to the DVD format that allows us to appreciate the animation more, Warner Bros fell far short of even my most meager expectations for what a DVD should be. I am glad I received this as a gift otherwise I might try to track down the Warner’s CEO for my forty bucks back, and until they correct their glaring technological and quality-control issues they will not see another dime from me on future South Park releases.
